Unfortunately this is something we come across all to often. This bonnet type cowl should only be used on a chimney pot where the chimney is no longer in use.
This steel register plate has been fixed in place using wooden battening. Clearly a combustable material! Always make sure you use an expert when having your stove installed!
The size of the flue on this install was only 4″ so it was unable to draw and the room continually filled with smoke. A qualified installer should know the diameter of the flue required to make an open fire appliance draw correctly.
